Martinez: Child killed in suspected DUI

A 5-year-old child was killed and another child suffered life-threatening injuries after a car crash early Sunday morning near Martinez.

According to the California Highway Patrol, an adult driver was in the car with the two children traveling westbound on Highway 4 near Morello Avenue.

Teen driver was involved in collision that killed San Jose pedestrian

The crash occurred around midnight, when the vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree.

The driver suffered only moderate injuries, but the 5-year-old was killed in the crash. An 11-year-old passenger also sustained major injuries and was transported to a hospital along with the driver.

According to investigators, the 5-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not properly restrained in a child seat.

Officers later arrested the driver at the hospital on suspicion of DUI and manslaughter.
