The solo-vehicle collision was reported around 2:35 p.m. on southbound I-680 at the Sunol Boulevard off-ramp, according to CHP dispatch logs.
A 2004 Honda Pilot left the roadway and hit a tree, CHP Officer Tyler Hahn told the Bay Area News Group.
Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, Hahn said, adding that two others suffered major injuries and four others suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash.
Hahn said it was not immediately clear what caused the Honda to leave the roadway, but he noted it was lightly raining at the time. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the crash.
The CHP issued a Sig-alert shortly after the crash. As of 4:05 p.m., two of the three lanes were open.
