Woman killed in Oakland traffic collision is identified; suspect facing multiple charges

OAKLAND — A woman killed last week in West Oakland when the car she was driving was hit by a stolen vehicle that police said was fleeing a hit-and-run collision was identified by the coroner’s office Tuesday.

The woman killed was Samrawit Abbadura, 23, of Oakland, authorities said.

The 34-year-old driver of the allegedly stolen vehicle was booked into Santa Rita Jail on Monday night after being released from a hospital where he was treated for injuries suffered in the Dec. 13 collision. He is being held on $110,000 bail for investigation of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, driving under the influence of drugs, felony hit-and-run, vehicle theft and possession of stolen property.

A 24-year-old woman who was a passenger in Abbadura’s vehicle remains hospitalized with multiple injuries, including some fractures, police said.

The collision happened just before 11 a.m. Dec. 13 at the intersection of 16th Street and Mandela Parkway.

Police allege the 34-year-old man was driving a Ford Fusion that had been reported stolen in Oakland earlier in the day. The man had been involved in a hit-and-run collision a few blocks away and was driving eastbound on 16th Street at a high rate of speed, authorities said.

Police said he failed to stop at two posted stop signs before broadsiding the Honda Accord driven by the 34-year-old woman; it was going northbound on Mandela Parkway.
