Man fatally shot in East Oakland

OAKLAND — An 18-year-old man was found shot to death early Wednesday inside his car in East Oakland, authorities said.

The name of the man was not immediately released pending confirmation of his identity and notification of his family.

Police said officers responding to a gunshot detection system alert found the man about 1:11 a.m. Wednesday suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside his car, which was parked in the 7800 block of Weld Street, a residential area. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said he was shot by someone standing outside the vehicle. Numerous shell casings were recovered at the scene.

Police said the man lived in another area of East Oakland. Investigators were trying to determine why he was on Weld Street and the motive for the killing.

No arrests were announced.

The killing is the 122nd homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time, police had investigated 116 homicides in the city.
