Marin police arrest Santa-hatted arson suspect

Novato police arrested a man suspected of setting three arson fires while wearing a Santa hat.

The fires happened on Dec. 6. Two bench fires were reported around 2:30 a.m. on Grant Avenue, and a third fire was found 45 minutes later in the Nave Shopping Center parking lot, police said.

Detectives reviewed surveillance footage and identified the suspect as Nicholas Alexander Tara, 32, of Novato. Officers arrested him Sunday after seeing him walking on South Novato Boulevard and allegedly carrying an imitation firearm.

Tara was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of burglary and arson. His bail was set at $300,000 and he remained in custody Tuesday.
