Prep roundup: Mitty set to face country’s top girls basketball team in nationally televised tournament final

Girls basketball

No. 1 Archbishop Mitty 69, Crestwood Preparatory College-Canada, 55

Archbishop Mitty, which has been favored in every previous game and is considered an invincible juggernaut in NorCal, will play an unfamiliar role in the nationally televised championship game on Thursday.

The San Jose school will be…..gasp….the underdog in the Nike Tournament of Champions finale.

The Monarchs, ranked No. 3 by MaxPreps, will face Long Island Lutheran, the No. 1 team, in a game shown on one of ESPN’s channels at 7 p.m.

In terms of New York star power, Kateryna Koval and Syla Swords are both Top-11 recruits in the class of 2024 according to ESPN, and Lutheran also have two other players ranked in the Top 100.

“We’re absolutely going to relish this role in terms of being the underdogs,” Phillips said. “And we’re excited to get better and play against the nation’s top team.”

Of course, this isn’t the kind of talent mismatch the Bay Area sees in its football Open championships. McKenna Woliczko and Morgan Cheli are both five-star recruits themselves, and a number of their Mitty teammates will also play college basketball.

To reach this point, Mitty routed Miami Country Day and and Xavier College Prep before facing Crestwood in the semifinal.

Crestwood, one of Canada’s elite programs, boasted the talents of Toby Fournier and a slew of other highly touted college prospects. For the first time all season, The Monarchs played a competitive basketball game.

Mitty still won by 14,

It was the first game the 6-0 Monarchs had not won by at least 20. Cheli and Elana Weisman each scored 20 points, and Woliczko had 20 points, nine rebounds and four blocks to stay alive in the Arizona tournament.

“These kids are used to traveling to play in AAU, every kid on our team does, so they handle this like a business trip,” Mitty coach Sue Phillip told the Bay Area News Group on Wednesday night. “But don’t get me wrong, they’re still kids and having a blast with each other.”

Bob Jones 44, No. 5 Carondelet 36

After winning its first two games in the John Anderson bracket at the Nike TOC by double digits, defeating West Linn-Oregon 62-52 and Centennial-Corona 56-45, the Cougars were stymied by Bob Jones-Alabama. Carondelet will play Park Hill South-Missouri in a consolation game on Thursday.

Millennium 49, No. 9 Salesian 37

Salesian’s rough stay at the Nike TOC continued as the Pride lost its third consecutive game in a row at the tournament in Arizona. Janiya Sawyer scored 22 points and made two 3-pointers to lead Salesian, and Madalyn Kanazawa was one of the few other bright spots, scoring 10 points and nabbing four steals.
