One killed, another injured in Menlo Park apartment fire

One woman and two dogs were killed and another woman was injured in a Menlo Park apartment fire on Sunday morning.

The fire department responded around 3 a.m. Sunday to an apartment building at 1017 Madera Ave. Residents had used a garden hose and fire extinguishers to quell the fire from outside, and once the officials forced entry into the ground-floor apartment, they found a small fire still burning in the living room.

The fire department performed a search, locating two women in their 60s in the back bedroom — one dead, the other in critical condition. Two pet dogs were also found dead from the fire.

The injured woman was taken to Stanford University Medical Hospital. She remained in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon.

The incident is still under investigation, but Jon Johnston, fire marshal at the Menlo Park Fire District, said it does not appear to be suspicious.
