Authorities did not identify the 28-year-old, pending the notification of his relatives, or say what breed of dog he owned. The crash happened about 2:45 a.m.

According to a statement from Lt. Rick Martin, police responded to Wilbur Avenue near the intersection of Apollo Court after receiving reports that a vehicle was on fire after having run into a tree.

The driver and the dog were dead when officers arrived. Fire crews from the Contra Costa Fire Protection District put out the fire.

Martin said they believe the driver was speeding, and may have been under the influence of alcohol. Authorities will determine if he was when toxicology results are returned from blood tests taken during an autopsy.

The wreck marked the city’s second fatal crash in five days. Police have not announced any arrests in their quest to find the driver responsible for a hit-and-run crash Dec. 22 that killed two young boys from Antioch, aged 12 and 13. Authorities still have not identified them.
