ORINDA — An eastbound car caught fire Tuesday afternoon at the Caldecott Tunnel, causing backups in both directions.
The fire at the left bore of the Caldecott Tunnel resulted in the bore being shut down. Though the fire occurred on eastbound Highway 24, motorists were backed up in both directions as westbound travelers slowed to get a look at the incident, authorities said.
Caltrans issued a warning to motorists to expect delays in both directions until further notice.
The fire’s cause remains under investigation.
