Alameda mishandling
city’s problem cops

Re: “Alameda approves $11.4M payout” (Page A1, Dec. 16).

A Dec. 16 article in the East Bay Times announced that the city of Alameda had approved $11.4 million in payouts to the family of Mario Gonzales, killed by Alameda police officers.

In its statement, the city said that the settlement “shall not be construed as an admission by any party of liability.” I would say that there had, indeed, been a $11.4 million admission of liability.

Why does the city of Alameda continue to sweep under the rug the problems of its police force and its power-drunk confrontations with Alamedans of color? And why does our City Council stand for it?

Climate change means
Florida has no future

Re: “Florida economically better than California” (Page A7, Dec. 26).

Mike Heller in his Dec. 26 letter overlooked a stark reality: Florida does not have a future.

Because of climate change, much of Florida will be underwater by the end of the century.

While that is a ways off, Florida is already feeling the impact of climate change with increasing frequency and magnitude of major destructive and fatal hurricanes and storms such as Hurricane Ian which caused $112 billion in damages and a deluge in Fort Lauderdale with 24 inches of rain in 10 hours.

Insurance companies are canceling policies or raising premiums by 40% this year so that Florida insurance rates are 3½ times the national average. This will only get worse and will make Florida expensive and unlivable within a few decades.

Rudy Giuliani is
a long-time liar

The phrase “9/11 hero mayor” applied to Rudolph Giuliani is cringeworthy. Not more than one or two days after that horror, his city health department and U.S. air quality monitors told the mayor not to suggest that people return to Manhattan immediately, and to protect their lungs. Many toxics still swirled, and asbestos was thick in the air.

How did Giuliani respond?

Everyone can come to work; open your windows, the air is fine. He knew that the flailing U.S. president would quickly begin the “America — Open for Business” campaign (“Only for Business,” realistically).
He also knew that he would be long gone by the time cancers, respiratory diseases and other medical issues from 9/11 took peoples’ lives — therefore, politically immune.

Once a miserable human, always a miserable human. His MAGA stance is not new. He was a pathetic liar then; he is a disgusting liar now.
