OAKLAND — Multiple people have been arrested in connection with the Friday slaying of Officer Tuan Le, the city’s police department announced Tuesday morning.
None of the suspects have been identified by police, who say that one of the arrestees was brought into custody within the past 12 hours. The Santa Rita Jail intake log shows multiple people arrested on burglary and robbery charges within the past day, but no one facing murder charges.
A brief news release calls the arrests a small step forward in a “lengthy legal process” and that police are still working “tirelessly to bring justice to the Le family.”
Le, 36, was shot and killed near the city’s waterfront on the 400 block of Embarcadero around 4:30 a.m. Friday while working a plainclothes burglary suppression detail. Police said officers first responded to a burglary call at a cannabis business on Embarcadero around 1 a.m. Friday and left after taking a report and securing the area.
Hours later, a second burglary in progress call came in about the same business. Le, who responded in an undercover vehicle, was shot, as several alleged burglars fled. He later died at Highland Hospital.
A memorial has been erected and police departments across California have issued statements in Le’s honor. He was the 54th Oakland police officer killed in the line of duty over the departments 160-year history, and the first in 14 years.
