Taylor Swift appeared to leave the 2024 Golden Globes ceremony early after initially turning heads by arriving in a shimmering green Gucci gown and De Beers diamond earrings.
Page Six reported that Swift’s fans noticed that her departure occurred after her concert film, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” lost the award to “Barbie” for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement — and after she was seen shooting an icy glare at host Jo Koy, who made a crack about her highly publicized appearances at boyfriend Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs’ games.
“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL — on the Golden Globes we have fewer camera shots to Taylor Swift,” Koy quipped during his opening monologue.
Swift also had been in the news over the weekend over a controversial New York Times opinion piece that openly speculated over whether she is a closeted queer person, CNN reported. The 5,000-word piece, written by editor Anna Marks and published late last week, offered up a long list of LGBTQ references in Swift’s songs, videos and performances. With these references, Marks wondered if Swift had for years been trying to signal that she identifies with the queer community — beyond offering up examples of “performative allyship.”
“In isolation, a single dropped hairpin is perhaps meaningless or accidental, but considered together, they’re the unfurling of a ballerina bun after a long performance,” Marks wrote. “Those dropped hairpins began to appear in Ms. Swift’s artistry long before queer identity was undeniably marketable to mainstream America. They suggest to queer people that she is one of us.”
The piece drew the ire of Swift’s associates, who denounced it, suggesting that it was unethical, unprecedented and misogynist, CNN reported Saturday.
“Because of her massive success, in this moment there is a Taylor-shaped hole in people’s ethics,” a person close to the situation told CNN. “This article wouldn’t have been allowed to be written about Shawn Mendes or any male artist whose sexuality has been questioned by fans.”
“There seems to be no boundary some journalists won’t cross when writing about Taylor, regardless of how invasive, untrue, and inappropriate it is — all under the protective veil of an ‘opinion piece,’” the person added to CNN.
Amid the “furor” over the New York Times piece, Swift stepped out in Beverly Hills on Saturday for another of her girls’ nights out — this time in Beverly Hills and with the wives of two Kansas City Chiefs players, the Daily Mail reported. The Chiefs were in Los Angeles over the weekend to play the Charges.
Swift was spotted with Brittany Mahomes and Lyndsay Bell, dining out at the exclusive Spago restaurant, the Daily Mail reported. The three women are believed to have spent the night at Swift’s Beverly Hills mansion.
On Sunday evening, Swift attended the Golden Globes without Kelce. Given that the Chiefs played the Chargers on Sunday afternoon, it probably would have been difficult for the team’s tight end to get across town in time for the Globes ceremony, which began at 5 p.m.
Swift was nominated for the new Golden Globe award in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category for her record-breaking concert film, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.”
For Swift, the ceremony began with Koy’s joke, which referred to Swift’s appearances at Chiefs’ games this past NFL season. She has been frequently featured during the televised broadcasts, with sports analysts saying that she and her romance with Kelce has helped boost the league’s ratings.
While Koy cracked his joke, the camera panned to Swift, who showed a stony expression and took a determined sip from her champagne glass. Viewers noted Swift’s reaction to what one called Koy’s “low-blow joke.”
“If looks could kill,” one viewer wrote on social media, Page Six reported.
“Taylor did NAWT think that was funny oh i’m giggling,” another person wrote, Page Six said, while a third said: “TAYLOR WAS SOOO NOT AMUSED OMFGGG.”
Then, came the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Shortly after it was announced that the award was going to “Barbie,” several Swift fans noticed that she was no longer sitting at the table near model Keleigh Sperry, who had accompanied her to the event.
“I think taylor left i don’t see her in the audience anymore,” one fan wrote, to which another replied, “Taylor actually left? asjdhfdsf shes so funny.” A third wrote, according to Page Six: “90% sure taylor has left the event she hasn’t been seen since barbie.”
