Prep roundup: Piedmont’s Natalia Martinez scores 41 points to beat O’Dowd

Girls basketball

No. 7 Piedmont 57, No. 4 Bishop O’Dowd 50

Piedmont senior Natalia Martinez put on a show Wednesday night as the Highlanders prevailed at home over Bishop O’Dowd in this West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division showdown.

Martinez scored 13 of her 41 points in the first quarter as Piedmont surged to an 18-4 advantage.

The Highlanders maintained the 14-point cushion at halftime and withstood O’Dowd’s 22-point fourth quarter to improve to 10-2, 1-0.

O’Dowd is 8-4, 0-1.

Devin Cosgriff (14 points), Savannah Jones (13 points) and Nyah Greenwood (11 points) led O’Dowd in scoring.

Piedmont will be at home to face St. Joseph Notre Dame on Friday. O’Dowd will play host to Salesian on Saturday in the Oakland school’s MLK Showcase.

No. 2 San Ramon Valley 48, No. 9 Pinewood 41

In a matchup between two of the Bay Area’s top teams, San Ramon Valley held off Pinewood down the stretch for the nonleague victory.

The host Wolves led by 10 after the first quarter and 15 at halftime but scored just three points in the third period.

Sofia Bowes scored 20 points and Avery Knapp finished with 17 points as San Ramon Valley, ranked second by the Bay Area News Group, improved to 16-1.

Alex Facelo (11 points), Katherine Garr (eight points) and Caitlyn Kramer (seven points) were Pinewood’s top scorers.

SRV extended its winning streak to 14 games while beating Pinewood (7-2) for the second consecutive season.

The Wolves play at California on Friday. Pinewood visits Carondelet on Saturday.

No. 10 Los Gatos 50, Homestead 38

Los Gatos, playing at home, got 19 points from Nicole Steiner and 18 from Ashley Childers to beat Homestead in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division game.

Los Gatos improved to 11-2, 2-0.

Elaine Cao finished with 13 points for Homestead, which fell to 5-10, 1-2.

Boys basketball

Half Moon Bay 61, No. 12 Menlo-Atherton 54

Menlo-Atherton brought an 11-0 record into this Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division opener on the road against Half Moon Bay.

The home team wasn’t fazed.

Asher Meighen scored 19 points and Gio Garduno Martin added 17 points to lead HMB to the victory,

The Cougars held a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and a 47-35 edge after three quarters on their way to improving to 10-4.

Jack Anderson provided most of M-A’s offense, finishing with 32 points to go with nine rebounds.

No. 13 Oakland Tech 70, Fremont-Oakland 51

Saddiq Alarbesh scored 21 points and Ardarius Grayson added 19 as Oakland Tech turned back host Fremont in Oakland Athletic League play.

Ozmandias Savage (15 points) and Jabez Rubio (10 points) were Fremont’s top scorers.

Rohm Neal finished with 18 points and Isaac Johnson chipped in with 10 as Oakland, last season’s Division III state champion, defeated visiting McClymonds in an OAL game.

Devon Mack had 22 points to lead Mack, which fell to 14-2, 0-1.

Oakland is 10-5, 1-0.
