Vote now: Bay Area News Group girls athlete of the week

Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) girls Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from Jan. 15-20.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Karena Eberts, Miramonte basketball: Eberts, a senior, surpassed 1,000 career rebounds in a victory over Clayton Valley Charter, a game in which she scored 30 points. Eberts followed that up by scoring 28 points in front of Miramonte legend Sabrina Ionescu in a win over Washington-Fremont. 

Cece Giguere, Lincoln-San Jose soccer: Giguere, a junior, scored four goals, including three in the first half, in a 7-1 victory over Sobrato. That gave her 16 goals on the season.

Vallory Kuelker, Pinewood basketball: Kuelker, a junior, had an unbelievable shooting performance against University, hitting 10 of 11 3-pointers and scoring 30 points. Kuelker finished the week shooting 44 percent from long-range on the season. 

Sofia Kwan, Mills basketball: Kwan, a junior, knocked down the buzzer-beating game-winner from mid-range to give Mills the 33-31 victory over Aragon. Kwan also scored 14 points in the next game, a victory over Half Moon Bay. 

Ruiqi Liu, Menlo School basketball: Liu scored 21 points and 12 rebounds in a 40-30 win over Crystal Springs Uplands, and had 15 points, four assists and three steals in a 52-32 win over Aptos in a MLK Day game.

Maile Nguyen, Granada wrestling: Nguyen, a senior, won the 123-pound division at the Mid-Cals tournament in Gilroy.

Vivian Ong, Monta Vista basketball: Ong, a senior, scored 11 points in Monta Vista’s victory against Homestead. Earlier in the week, Ong scored nine points against a ranked Los Gatos team. 

Makayla Powell, Mt. Diablo basketball: Powell, a senior, secured her 10th double-double of the season when she scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a victory over College Park. The win helped Mt. Diablo improve to 18-3 on the season. 

Ayla Rege, Salesian basketball: Rege, a senior, scored 34 points in Salesian’s 65-45 victory over Redwood. Rege, a 4.5 GPA student, scored 72 total points over four Pride victories last week. 

Hailey Smith, Castro Valley soccer: Smith, a junior, scored the game-winning goal in Castro Valley’s 1-0 win against East Bay power Berkeley. That was her 14th goal of the season, and helped the Trojans remain undefeated in league play. 

Nicole Steiner, Los Gatos basketball: Steiner, a senior, had back-to-back games with 20-plus rebounds in Los Gatos victories. She put up 15 points and 20 rebounds against Fremont-Sunnyvale, and then 20 and 21 against Monta Vista. 

Mia Talalele, Santa Clara basketball: Talalele, a junior, scored 23 points in Santa Clara’s win over Wilcox. The sister of USC offensive lineman Amos Talalele is approaching 1,000 career points.
