The two who died in a Brentwood murder-suicide have been identified

Authorities on Wednesday identified two people who died in what the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office called a murder-suicide in unincorporated north Brentwood on Monday.

Sheriff’s office deputies and SWAT team negotiators were at the home in the 200 block of East Sims Road from 3 p.m. until it was dark. They entered the home after hearing a gunshot sometime after dark and found a man and woman.

Sheriff’s office spokesperson Jimmy Lee identified the woman as 40-year-old Shara Kent, of Brentwood. He identified the man as 37-year-old Craig Goatley, of Brentwood.

In a statement Tuesday, Lee said deputies showed up initially to do a welfare check. When they got there, they found Goatley hiding in a bathroom. He told them through the door that he had fatally shot a woman and that he had several guns.

A SWAT team eventually came to the scene and tried to talk the man out of the home. Eventually, they heard the gunshot.

When SWAT team members went inside, they found Kent dead from a gunshot wound and Goatley suffering from a self-inflicted wound. He died after being taken by ambulance to a hospital.

Authorities have not said what they think spurred the violence.
