OAKLAND — A man accused of robbing a family and shooting into a vehicle with a baby inside it has gone on the lam after apparently slipping out of a court hearing and then somehow disabling his ankle bracelet, authorities said.
Patrice Davis, 28, is wanted on a no-bail warrant after walking out from a court date Thursday at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in downtown Oakland. His ankle monitor device was last picked up in East Oakland, somewhere near High Street and MacArthur Boulevard, according to authorities.
Davis was jailed earlier this month after police investigators say he robbed a family at gunpoint and shot into an occupied car but he later posted bail due to a court clerical error.
Police say Davis approached the car at around 8 p.m. on Jan. 12 on the 1200 block of 104th Avenue in East Oakland, and allegedly robbed the people inside it of a purse, wallet and their cellphones. When a man told Davis to stop because there were children in the car, Davis allegedly responded, “I don’t care, I’ll kill you and your kids.”
At some point, he fired shots at the car, missing a baby and a 6-year-old child seated inside, police say. Davis was wearing an ankle monitor at the time because he was on probation after pleading no contest last year to possessing ammunition as part of a plea deal with county prosecutors.
At his arraignment on Jan. 18 in the recent robbery, Alameda County Judge Elena Condes provisionally set bail at $800,000. However, a clerical error led to that amount being registered as $100,000, and he later bailed out of jail, court records show.
When he showed for his next court date on Thursday, he apparently walked out sometime after attorneys and Alameda County Judge David Pereda huddled privately to discuss the case. Once they realized he was gone, his ankle monitor was “not in close proximity” to the courthouse, records show.
As of early Friday afternoon, Davis was not in custody. He has known ties to Oakland and Stockton.
