Romana Pizzeria opens in Danville with ‘Roman-style’ pizza, Buffalo wings

Danville has a new spot to grab a slice with this January’s opening of Romana Pizzeria, a restaurant serving hand-tossed pizzas with both thin and Roman-style square crusts.

Romana had its grand opening on Jan. 19 at 251 Hartz Ave., one block down from a Mountain Mike’s Pizza and a block over from the Neapolitan-pizza joint Locanda Ravello. It appears to be firmly entrenched in this town’s Pizza District, with Primo’s Pizzeria & Pub right across the street and three more restaurants a quick jaunt down the avenue (Provence Pizza and Cafe, Blue Line Pizza and Domino’s).

Romana bills its dough as made fresh every day and then fermented for 72 hours. The toppings and other ingredients are imported or come from local markets. Diners can customize their own Italian pizzas by choosing a crust (thin or square), sauce (red, garlic marinara or pesto) and toppings. Or they can order one of the specialty ‘zas on the menu, like the Calabrese with salami, sausage, goat cheese and arugula or the Melanzana with mozzarella, roasted eggplant, feta and a drizzle of balsamic oil.

Mini Santana Row, thousands of homes, are eyed in San Ramon

There are a few salad options, including a Caesar with rosemary-focaccia croutons and a Romana with baby arugula, walnuts, pears and roasted beets, plus garlic knots, baked Buffalo wings and a classic red-sauce lasagna. (Those last items are also available for catering.) There aren’t any alcoholic drinks on the menu, but there is Mexican Coke and flavored San Pellegrino. For dessert, there’s tiramisu and cheesecake and cannoli.
