San Jose Sharks defenseman added to AHL All-Star Classic

SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin on Wednesday was added to the Pacific Division roster for the AHL All-Star Classic, which begins this weekend at Tech CU Arena.

Before his recall by the Sharks last week, Mukhamadullin had 26 points in 39 games for the Barracuda. Among AHL defensemen, Mukhamadullin, listed at 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, was tied for sixth with 21 assists and was 10th in points at the time of his recall.

Mukhamadullin, who was born in Ufa, Russia, joins countryman Danil Gushchin as the Barracuda’s representatives at the event.

Gushchin, as of earlier this week, was considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury he suffered last Friday in a home game against the Calgary Wranglers. He was still part of the Pacific Division’s roster as of Wednesday.

For the season, Gushchin, a third-round pick by the Sharks in 2020 who turns 22 on Feb. 6, leads the Barracuda with 37 points in 39 games.

In two games with the Sharks, Mukhamadullin, 22, has zero points with a plus-minus rating of +1 and averaged 20:45 in ice time per game.

Mukhamadullin was acquired by the Sharks last February as part of the massive trade that sent Timo Meier to the New Jersey Devils. Mukhamadullin was taken 20th overall by the Devils at the 2020 NHL Draft and with his range, fluid skating, and offensive upside, is considered the Sharks’ top defensive prospect.

The AHL All-Star Classic begins with a skills competition on Sunday and the All-Star Challenge on Monday.

Sharks alumni Dan Boyle and Wayne Thomas will serve as captains for the event.

The event also includes the AHL Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony — featuring the Hall of Fame inductions of Dennis Bonvie, Gordie Clark, Gerry Ehman, and Roy Sommer — scheduled for Monday morning at the Montgomery Theater in San Jose.

The 66-year-old Sommer, a native of Oakland, served as the head coach for the Sharks’ AHL affiliate for 24 seasons. In that time, he became the AHL’s all-time leader in wins and games coached, compiling a record of 808-721-48-159.
