Time to retire
polluting refineries

Re: “Refiners say they’ve gone green” (Page A1, Feb. 4).

Thank you for highlighting the environmental perspective on the biofuel transition at Phillips 66 and Marathon.

Processing biofuels is not a clean, green endeavor — it pollutes the air, threatening the health of nearby communities. The refineries in Rodeo and Martinez are dinosaurs that should go extinct. The displaced workers should be retrained and hired elsewhere.

Local residents should not have to keep suffering the health consequences of air pollution just so these multibillion-dollar corporations can continue using their old business model.

Reelect Nate Miley to
Board of Supervisors

Castro Valley needs to reelect our experienced, dedicated and respected Supervisor Nate Miley.

For years, Miley and his staff worked very hard to preserve our Madison Area Specific Plan (MASP). In 1974, the MASP was adopted because residents asked the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to protect our neighborhood.

In 2005, neighbors asked Miley to strengthen the plan provisions to preserve our neighborhood’s environment. Miley and his staff coordinated government agency meetings, workshops and ballot surveys which culminated in clearer policy and implementation language. In 2006, the MASP was adopted by the Board of Supervisors.

Miley has always been a strong supporter of our arts, education and senior groups. He has the experience to get the job done.

Laurene Green for
Zone 7 Water Board

Laurene Green gets my vote for Zone 7.

She is an incumbent and, fortunately for us, is running again. She has been a driving force behind eliminating PFAS from Zone 7 groundwater. She continuously strives to bring all involved together to reach a consensus in the Tri-Valley.

Green is passionate about serving on our Zone 7 Water Board. Please vote for her.

Israelis have no right
to deprive human rights

Does having been the victim of human rights abuses give one the right to rob others of theirs?

I fail to understand why those responsible for the emotional and physical brutality currently being unleashed upon Palestinians in the Gaza and West Bank are not being held accountable for their actions. While it’s true that the horrendous persecution, brutality and death experienced by those of Jewish descent must never be forgotten, the same can be said about the horrendous persecution, brutality and death experienced by those of African descent.

Why are members of one group exempt from being held accountable for crimes against persons and property, but not the other? Since when does having been an innocent victim of ruthless behavior give one a free pass to rob other innocent victims of their human rights?
