Arrest made in San Mateo bank robbery, attempted hold up

SAN MATEO — Police on Thursday arrested a 55-year-old San Mateo man on suspicion of robbing one bank and trying to hold up another in the city earlier this week.

The attempted bank robbery happened around 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of South El Camino Real, the San Mateo Police Department said in a news release.

Police said the suspect passed a note to a teller demanding money, but after a brief interaction, he left without taking any cash.

Detectives found evidence at the scene and identified a possible suspect, police said.

On Wednesday, as the investigation was continuing, police received word of a bank robbery in the 400 block of South El Camino Real. The suspect matched the description of the person who tried to hold up the bank in the 300 block of South El Camino Real.

The suspect was arrested Thursday and booked into San Mateo County jail on charges of second-degree robbery and second-degree attempted robbery, police said.
