Vote now: Bay Area News Group girls athlete of the week

Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) girls Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from Feb. 5-10.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at [email protected].

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Piper Bertani, Leigh soccer: Bertani, a senior, scored three total goals against Leland and Lincoln-San Jose as a defender. Bertani is a co-captain on a team that ended the week 16-0-1. 

Anusha Chadalavada, Fremont-Sunnyvale basketball: Chadalavada, a senior, scored 22 points in Fremont’s 68-38 victory over Homestead. Three of her points were scored at the buzzer to end the third quarter. 

Tera Chen, San Ramon Valley basketball: Chen, a senior, scored 12 points in San Ramon Valley’s East Bay Athletic League championship victory over Carondelet. She also played frenetic defense against the Cougars’ talented guards. 

Snowe DeLeon, Mt. Pleasant basketball: DeLeon, a junior, scored a game-high 21 points on 10-16 shooting from the floor in a victory over Prospect. That helped DeLeon maintain a 22.5 point-per-game scoring average for the season. 

Jasleen Dhaliwal, Milpitas basketball: Dhaliwal, a senior, scored 11 points and six rebounds in a victory over Wilcox. She ended the week averaging 11 points and seven rebounds for the season. 

Gianna Giusto, Carondelet soccer: Giusto, a senior, scored three goal – a hattrick – in a victory against Foothill in the EBAL playoffs. She also assisted her Angelina on a goal to cap off her impressive game. 

Julia Ignatov, American soccer: Ignatov, a junior, scored two goals and dished out two assists against Irvington. She also scored twice in another victory over Mission San Jose. Her efforts helped American clinch its first league title since 1991.

Exuberance! San Ramon Valley rallies, beats De La Salle to win EBAL tournament title

Maylen Montoya, Amador Valley soccer: Montoya, a junior, scored a goal and had an assist in the Dons’ 3-0 victory over Carondelet in the East Bay Athletic League championship game. She also scored and assisted in the semifinal victory over San Ramon Valley. Amador Valley improved to 10-1-1. 

Karena Shah, Mountain View soccer: Shah, a captain on the Mountain View team, scored four goals against Saratoga and one vs. Palo Alto last week. That gave her 17 goals in 18 games, and her 56 goals is a program record. 

Dulci Vail, Acalanes basketball: Vail, a junior, scored 36 points in Acalanes’ Diablo Athletic League championship win over Miramonte. Vail scored 25 of her points in the first half. She also scored 20 points in the semifinal win against Northgate.
