Santa Clara boy, 3, shot to death, mother reports boyfriend was killer

A 24-year-old Santa Clara man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murder after a 3-year-old boy was shot and killed, police said.

The child’s mother called police just before 2:30 a.m. and said her live-in boyfriend had shot her son, Santa Clara police said Tuesday evening.

1 dead after Oakland Friday night shooting

Officers responded to a residence in the 3700 block of Poinciana Drive minutes later and found the boy with a gunshot wound, and CPR could not save him, police said. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was found near the home, resisted arrest, and was taken into custody after a brief struggle, police said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said. A handgun was found at the site of the shooting, police said.

Suspect Sergio Colin Gomez was in custody on Tuesday evening and was expected to be booked into Santa Clara County’s Main Jail on suspicion of murder, police said.

A motive for the shooting has not been determined.
