Road rage near Newport Beach pier leads to shooting; man in Tesla SUV injured

A man was shot in the shoulder near the Newport Beach pier following a report of road rage and was released from a hospital following treatment Wednesday morning, Feb. 28, authorities said.

Newport Beach police received a call of shots fired in a parking lot in the 2100 block of West Oceanfront Walk about 12:15 a.m., Sgt. Scott Oberon said. A short time later, a man driving a Tesla SUV flagged down officers in the area of San Joaquin Hills and Jamboree roads.

The man was found with a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital by paramedics, Oberon said.

The sergeant said the Tesla’s driver pulled up next to a parked dark-colored sedan with four males standing next to it following the reported road rage. They argued before one of the men pulled a gun from his waistband and fired five times at the SUV, hitting the driver once.
