One dead, traffic a mess, after three-vehicle crash within MacArthur Maze leading to Bay Bridge

A three-vehicle collision early Tuesday within the MacArthur Maze killed a person and caused a long traffic backup leading to the Bay Bridge, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened about 4:30 a.m. on westbound Interstate 580 at the maze leading to I-80, the CHP said. It involved a Lexus, a utility truck and a utility van, according to initial reports confirmed by the agency.

Authorities did not identify the dead person immediately.

Two left lanes were blocked after the crash, and the CHP issued a Sig-Alert for severe traffic. There was no estimate for when the crash would be cleared.

Traffic on Highway 24 was affected by the wreck and backed up nearly to the Caldecott Tunnel.

No other information was available immediately.
