Danna Hernandez Tapia, of Tualatin, Oreg. died at the scene following the 5:15 a.m. crash on Interstate 680 at the state Highway 242 divide.

Her mom, 13-year-old sibling and 17-year-old female cousins all suffered major injuries and were hospitalized. California Highway Patrol spokesperson Officer Adam Lane said they all are expected to survive.

Authorities identified Danna on Tuesday.

The driver of the gray Mazda CX-9 ran from the scene and remains on the loose, Lane said. Law enforcement is trying to find him, and the investigation is continuing, he said. The CHP has not said whether the driver also is a family member.

They believe he is in his 30s but had no detailed description of him.

The Mazda ended up on its roof after the crash, and several people who were not buckled in were thrown from the car, Lane said. He added that the Mazda went through a dirt median that separated I-680 from Hwy. 242 and overturned more than one time.

No other vehicles were involved, and the crash location allowed the CHP to have all freeway lanes cleared within 30 minutes.

The CHP urged anyone who may have information to contact their Contra Costa office at [email protected] or 925-646-4980.
