The names of the men killed were not immediately released pending confirmation of their identities and notification of family members.

The fatality that resulted in a detention happened around 10:50 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of 73rd Avenue and Orral Street in East Oakland.

Initial reports were that a man riding a motorcycle was struck from behind by a car, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman driving the car was detained for questioning because she appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, authorities said. She had not been formally arrested as of early Monday.

The other fatal crash happened around 2:40 a.m. Monday in the 300 block of Grand Avenue, a few blocks from Lake Merritt.

Police said a man was driving an SUV eastbound on Grand Avenue when he left the roadway and crashed into a tree. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Anyone with information about either crash is asked to call police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
