Man shot, killed driving car on California freeway; motorcyclist is suspected gunman

A man driving a car was shot and killed by a motorcyclist as they drove on the eastbound 10 Freeway near Covina and San Dimas early Saturday morning, May 11, authorities said.

The shooting occurred just past 2:10 a.m. just west of Via Verde Street in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Dan Keene told KeyNewsTV, a freelance videographer, and other reporters at the scene.

A man in his 20s was driving with a passenger in a white Chevrolet Camaro when the motorcyclist pulled up and fired multiple shots at the car for unknown reasons, Keene said. The driver of the car was struck once, pulled over and called 911 as the motorcyclist continued eastbound.

The passenger escaped injury, Keene said.

CHP officers arrived seven minutes after the call and attempted to help the driver until paramedics arrived, Keene said. The driver died at the scene. He was later identified as Alexander Espino of Bloomington, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office and the CHP.

Keene said no words were exchanged between the motorcyclist and the Camaro driver before the shots were fired, but he didn’t rule out the possibility that they may have both been leaving an event in the Los Angeles area.

The occupants of the Camaro were headed home in the Inland Empire, he said.

No weapons were found in the car.

The motorcyclist was described as riding a black Harley-Davidson-style motorcycle while wearing a black helmet and black clothing, Keene said.
