Man fatally shot while driving near Oakland’s City Hall

OAKLAND — A 36-year-old man was fatally shot Monday morning while he drove near City Hall, authorities said.

The man’s name has not yet been released pending confirmation of where he lived and notification of his relatives.

The shooting, which was captured on a gunshot detection system, happened about 2;20 a.m. Monday in the 500 block of 14th Street, near Clay Street.

Antioch man’s death being investigated as a homicide

Police said the man was driving westbound on 14th Street and was shot multiple times.  He drove a short distance further before crashing into a fence.

He was given emergency aid at the scene by police before being taken to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 3 a.m., authorities said.

Police have not yet determined if the man was shot by someone in another vehicle or someone standing outside.  A motive for the shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been made.

The killing is the 30th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year.  Last year at this time police had investigated 36 homicides in the city.
