Driver dead following fiery crash in Fremont

An off-duty Fremont police officer came across the scene near Fremont Boulevard and Thornton Avenue around 12:30 a.m., the Fremont Police Department said in a news release.

The vehicle had crashed into a large tree and was starting to catch fire, police said.

The driver was killed in the crash, police said. The death marked the city’s third traffic fatality of the year.

The officer pulled a passenger out of the car, police said. He was taken to an area hospital for medical care.

The driver and passenger were both identified as 19-year-old residents of Newark.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police said excessive speed appeared to be a “significant factor.” It was not immediately known if alcohol or drugs also played a role.
