The blaze was reported just before 3 p.m. at Sims Metal, located at 699 Seaport Blvd.

The fire broke out in a metal scrap pile that was set to be shredded, said Redwood City Interim Deputy Fire Chief Chuck Lax. He estimated the pile was 200 feet by 200 feet and 20 to 30 feet tall.

Lax said 18 to 20 firefighters were working with plant employees to knock down the blaze.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Smoke from the fire managed to drift into the South Bay, spurring the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety to urge residents who are sensitive to smoke to stay indoors.
