Police ID man killed in San Leandro shooting with Playstation box in hand

SAN LEANDRO — Authorities here have released the identity of a 26-year-old man shot and killed during what appeared to be a robbery last month.

Nathaniel McCowan was fatally shot a little after 6 p.m. on April 1, near the intersection of Hesperian Boulevard and Colby Street in San Leandro, police said. He was pronounced dead at the crime scene.

McCowan walked up to the area holding a Playstation bag. A few moments later, police say a man came up to him, grabbed the bag, shot him at least once and ran off to a getaway car.

A family member of the victim told authorities that McCowan had been advertising property online to raise rent money and planned on selling a Playstation 5, but police have yet to recover the box and confirm its contents, authorities said.

No suspects have been publicly identified and police have not announced any arrests.
