A person died early Friday in a highway crash, the California Highway Patrol said.

San Jose police investigating fatal crash on Montague Expressway

The crash happened about 3 a.m. on Highway 101 in the northbound direction at San Antonio Road, between Mountain View and Palo Alto according to the agency. Traffic from the crash backed up into the commute hour.

All lanes were blocked following the wreck, and the CHP issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic about 3:30 a.m. The far left lane opened 5:25 a.m., and the CHP said all lanes were expected to be open before the end of the morning commute.

Authorities did not say immediately how the crash happened, nor did they have a gender or approximate age of the victim, who won’t be identified until relatives have been notified.
