San Mateo police arrested a man on Sunday morning on suspicion of numerous crimes, including possession of illegal fireworks, drugs and a firearm.
The suspect, a 22-year-old man from San Mateo, was booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of transporting a controlled substance, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of a silencer, possession of unlawful paraphernalia, possession of marijuana for sale, possession of a semiautomatic pistol with threaded barrel and possession of fireworks without a permit, according to a news release Tuesday from San Mateo police.
Officers responded to a disturbance around 10:46 a.m. Sunday between a couple at a home on the 300 block of North Grant.
Police found the suspect in a parked car near the house. After searching the car, officers found illegal fireworks and marijuana.
An investigation of the house uncovered nine pounds of marijuana, 162 grams of methamphetamine, an unregistered pistol with a silencer and ammunition and more than 140 pounds of illegal fireworks, authorities said.
Fireworks are illegal in San Mateo County, except for so-called “safe and sane” devices, which are allowed in Pacifica and San Bruno. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting three fireworks buyback events to encourage residents to turn in fireworks.
They will be held in more locations on the coast and in North County and North Fair Oaks. The Sherriff’s Office is also giving people up to $200 for turning in fireworks.
Here are when and where the county’s three buyback events are:
Saturday, June 15, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Coastside Fire Protection District Headquarters in Half Moon Bay (1191 Main St.)
Saturday, June 22, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Northern Branch Courthouse in South San Francisco (1050 Mission Rd.)
Saturday, June 29, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new Sheriff’s Office Substation in Redwood City (690 Broadway St.)
