The incident unfolded around 4:15 p.m. at the station, located at 880 Tennent Ave., police said in a news release.

The employee had finished helping another person moments earlier when the man walked up to the front counter. Police said the employee greeted the man, who responded by ringing the counter bell several times and grabbing her by the right arm.

The employee fought back but the man pulled her toward him, preventing her from escaping, police said.

When she managed to break free, the man climbed over the counter and chased after her, police said. She took refuge in an administrative office area with the aid of another employee.

Officers heard the commotion and went to investigate. They confronted the man in the main hallway and arrested him. He was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on charges of burglary, kidnapping, false imprisonment, battery, assault and a misdemeanor warrant.

The incident remains under investigation.
