HERCULES — A man authorities said died early Saturday after his speeding car crashed into some trees on a Highway 4 offramp was identified by the coroner’s office Tuesday as Camron Johnson, 33, of Rodeo.
The crash happened about 2:39 a.m. Saturday on the San Pablo Avenue offramp from westbound Highway 4.
Authorities said Johnson was driving a Chevrolet Cruze sedan at high speed when the vehicle veered off the roadway and crashed into some trees.
Hercules police said the impact caused the vehicle’s engine to be ejected into the brush, causing a fire that was soon extinguished.
Rodeo-Hercules Fire Protection District firefighters had to cut open the vehicle to get to Johnson, who was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.
The fatality is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol. Anyone with information about the crash or what led up to it is asked to call the CHP”s Martinez office at 925-646-4980.
