The fatal collision happened just after 8 p.m. at the intersection of Stevens Creek Boulevard and Hanson Avenue, the San Jose Police Department said in a social media post.
The pedestrian, identified only as a woman, was taken to an area hospital, where she died of her injuries, according to police.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the woman’s identity after it is confirmed and her next of kin is notified.
The death marked the 38th traffic fatality of the year on city streets. At this time last year, San Jose had recorded 36 roadway deaths.
The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
Eastbound Stevens Creek Boulevard from Cypress Avenue to Hanson Avenue will be closed for a “significant amount of time,” according to police. People are asked to avoid the area.
