Saratoga resident loses $1.2 million in social media scam

Sept. 24

Residential burglary: Between 10 a.m. on Sept. 19 and 3:10 p.m. on Sept. 24, aomeone entered a residence in the 20000 block of Kilbride Drive by shattering the rear glass sliding door and stole assorted jewelry for a total loss of $1,525.

Sept. 26

Residential burglary: Between 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 25 and  7:30 a.m. on Sept. 26, somone entered a residence under construction in the 12000 block of Saratoga Creek Drive and stole tools and contracting equipment for a total loss of $3,449.

Theft by false pretenses: Between midnight on June 1 and noon on Sept. 16, someone contacted a Saratoga resident via social media claiming to work as a financial investor. The suspect instructed the victim to send several bank transfers for a total loss of $1.2 million.

Sept. 27

Identity theft: Between midnight on Aug. 2 and 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 27, someone used a Saratoga resident’s information to open a wireless account. The victim did not sustain any financial loss.

Oct. 1

Identity theft, check fraud: A Saratoga resident reported that someone used their personal information to access their bank account, added a false email and phone number to the account, and then wrote and cashed a fraudulent check in the amount of $3,148, which the bank reimbursed.

Oct 2

Vehicle burglary: Between 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 and 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 2, someone broke the windows of three vehicles parked in the 19000 block of Shubert Drive and searched the glovebox of each. Nothing was reported stolen.

False ID to peace officer, suspended license: At 10:04 a.m., deputies stopped a motorist at Saratoga-Sunnyvale and Prospect Roads for an equipment violation. An investigation revealed the motorist was driving with a suspended license and provided deputies with false identifying information to avoid detection of outstanding warrants. The suspect was arrested and booked into main jail.

Commercial burglary: Between 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 3 and 8 a.m. on Oct. 4, someone entered Big Basin Burger Bar on Big Basin Way by cutting a chain that secured two doors at the back of the restaurant, then forced entry to an office inside the business.

Trespassing: At 10:32 a.m., deputies responded to a disturbance at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church and School on Saratoga Avenue. An investigation resulted in the arrest of the suspect for trespassing after previous admonishments not to return to the premises.

Residential burglary: Between 5:30 p.m. and 11:15 p.m., someone entered a residence in the 18000 block of Clemson Avenue by breaking a rear sliding glass door. Nothing was reported stolen.

Shoplifting: At 8:10 p.m., someone entered CVS in the Argonaut Center on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road and stole merchandise valued at approximately $200.

Oct. 6

Defrauding an Innkeeper: At 12:30 p.m., two suspects finished a meal at Darla Café on Big Basin Way and fled the restaurant without paying for a total loss of approximately $41.
