The incident started around 1:40 p.m., when police received an automated license plate reader alert about the car, Berkeley police Officer Bryon White said in a statement.

Officers found the car, described as a red Audi, in the parking lot of a grocery store in the downtown area. However, the suspects drove off as officers arrived at the scene, hitting one patrol car and nearly striking another in the process, White said.

The suspects also drove onto a sidewalk and nearly hit several pedestrians, White said.

Officers pursued the Audi into Oakland, where the suspects crashed into two vehicles at the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Calaveras Avenue, White said.

One of the vehicles appeared to be a school bus.

The occupants of the Audi, a woman and a man, were taken into custody, White said. The woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a stolen vehicle, and hit and run; the man was arrested on a felony warrant.

A Berkeley officer and the driver of one of the vehicles that was struck were taken to an area hospital, the former for a leg injury and the latter for a complaint of pain.

The suspects were also taken to an area hospital for a medical evaluation, White said.
