The fatal collision happened around 11:45 a.m. at Colleen Terrace and Dunsmuir Common, according to the Fremont Police Department.

An initial investigation determined a driver was pulling out of a parking stall when a 3-year-old “unexpectedly moved in front of the vehicle,” police said in a news release. The front left side of the vehicle hit the toddler and the driver immediately stopped.

Officers and firefighters performed life-saving measures, but the child died of their injuries at the scene, according to police.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but alcohol and drugs did not appear to play a role, according to police.

The death marks the city’s 11th traffic fatality of the year. Six have happened on roadways, three on state routes and two on private property.
