A Ventura County brush fire that ignited on a day of red-flag warnings across California quickly grew to 1,000 acres and forced evacuations east of Oxnard.

County Fire unveils larger station in Santa Cruz Mountains

The Mountain Fire was reported shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, and within an hour, evacuations were ordered for a 30-square-mile area, shown in red on the map above.

By 10 a.m., it was estimated at 1,000 acres.

High winds grounded fixed-wing aircraft, so helicopters were requested for the Ventura County Fire Department’s efforts to contain the fire.

Red-flag warnings,  indicating heightened fire danger, were in effect Wednesday for much of coastal California. The warning for the Ventura area cited low humidity and strong Santa Ana winds.
