Unidentified body recovered near Santa Cruz County beach

DAVENPORT — Emergency responders retrieved the body of an unresponsive man from the ocean north of Davenport Beach over the weekend.

Witnesses called 911 shortly around 1:15 p.m. Saturday to report spotting what appeared to be a body in the water not far from a sea cave and remains of a pier. Santa Cruz County Supervisor Justin Cummings identified himself on his personal social media as the person who had discovered the body, describing the individual as an apparent middle-aged white adult man with brown hair. Cummings urged those who might know of a missing person to contact the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office is not treating the death as suspicious, according to agency spokesperson Ashley Keehn. She confirmed the description of a white man who appeared to be middle-aged.

The Sheriff’s Office, Cal Fire CZU unit, Santa Cruz Fire Department, State Parks rescue swimmers and other agencies responded to the call. Responders retrieved the body from the water but pronounced him dead at the scene, Keehn said.

The Coroner’s Unit continued to work to identify the decedent Monday, Keehn said.
