Officers arrested both people on suspicion of child endangerment and suspected drug violations after being dispatched to the store in the 1600 block of Sycamore Avenue for a report of a theft about 4:25 p.m., according to a statement posted by the department. Police said they also will seek gun charges for one of them after finding unregistered guns, including an assault rifle, at a residence.
A different family member took custody of the child, police said.
Officers first saw the two as they exited the store and approached a Chevrolet Cruze parked in a handicap spot, according to police. The engine was running with the infant alone inside.
The officers recognized both suspects; police said one of them was on probation for felony robbery. A probation search followed, and police said they found large undetermined amounts of marijuana and promethazine. Police said the marijuana was packaged for sale, and the promethazine had no prescription label.
A later probation search of the residence for one of the suspects’ Hercules residence uncovered more marijuana, an unregistered assault weapon and an unregistered pistol, police said.
