New supe for schools

Ruben Fernandez has been named the new assistant superintendent of business services for the Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District.

Fernandez, who will start the job on April 1, will have responsibilities that include the district’s budget, financial services, food services and facilities.

Fernandez comes to the West Valley from the Walnut Creek School District, where he was responsible for the district’s finance and business services as the director of innovation and technology. District officials had been looking to fill the position since Delores Perley, who previously held the position, retired in December.

“He has a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to equity and creating positive change,” Superintendent Bill Sanderson said in a press release.

New look for old restaurant

Pedro’s, the longtime Los Gatos establishment that has been in the community for over 50 years, is getting a new look. The restaurant is temporarily closed for its first renovation since it opened in 1972.

“We will reopen by the end of summer 2024 with a transformed space and an updated menu, looking towards the future while honoring the history and community that got us here,” the restaurant’s website reads.

In the meantime, the restaurant is directing its usual customers to its second location at 3935 Freedom Circle in Santa Clara.

Cooking to prevent disease

Jane Esselstyn and Ann Esselstyn, co-authors of two books about cooking to prevent disease, are teaming up with Plant Based Advocates and the Los Gatos Library to host an event on the topic on March 18, 5-6 p.m.

“They will explore some of the many whole food, plant-based ingredients that have been shown to lower cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure and improve blood glucose numbers,” the Los Gatos Library’s website reads.
