It was not immediately clear how the person died. No pets were involved in the incident, the City of San Jose Animal Care & Services said in a social media post.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the city contractor who passed away,” the agency said. “The City of San Jose team is devastated by this news and is focusing on supporting staff who worked with their colleague.”

The center at 2750 Monterey Road was closed following the death, but it was expected to reopen for normal activities Saturday.

An investigation is underway, the agency said, adding that it is working with the San Jose police and fire departments, as well as the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

A police department spokesperson did not immediately return a message seeking details about the incident.
