The drowning happened Saturday in the waters near the 400 block of Halcyon Place on Bethel Island. The island is in the San Joaquin River Delta.

Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded about 4:30 p.m. to a report of a missing child, and a rescue swimmer found the boy submerged in a cove about 5:10 p.m., according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesperson Capt. Joe Ottolini.

Rescuers attempted CPR, and medics rushed the boy to a hospital. He was pronounced dead there.
