Prep roundup: Salesian boys win Gridley Invitational championship on 30-foot buzzer-beater

Boys basketball

Salesian 63, Branson 60

With the game tied at 60 with just a few seconds left, Alvin Loving IV raced downcourt and splashed a 30-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Salesian the victory over Branson in the Gridley Invitational final.

Salesian is now 6-0 on the season. Before downing Branson at the buzzer, Salesian had won its other five games all by double-digits.

Salesian’s Deundrae Perteet scored a team-high 15 points, as did point guard Aaron Claytor, who scored 10 points in the fourth quarter. Zion Yeargin scored nine points, and Loving and Elias Obenyah each scored seven. 

Jase Butler, an Illinois commit, led Branson with 23 points, while teammate Finley Keefe scored 11. 

De La Salle 66, Justin-Siena 30

De La Salle rolled past Justin-Siena to win the Christian Brother’s Classic championship. Alec Blair had a great all-around game, scoring 16 while grabbing seven rebounds, handing out four assists and nabbing three steals. 

Leo Ricketts scored 11, Bryce Patton had eight and Jason Brown made his presence felt on the defensive end with three steals. 

St. Ignatius 75, University-San Francisco 74

Ray Whitley was one of four SI players to hit double-digits in the Wildcats’ narrow victory over another San Francisco school. Whitley had 18, Steele Labagh and Marcus Bast each scored 16 points, and Theo Lamb put in 14 points. 

Campolindo 49, Liberty 37

Tim Smith left the way with 14 points and nine rebounds as Campolindo defeated Liberty at a tournament. Gavin Rendle made four 3-pointers to score his 12 points, and Diggy Mansour had 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

San Ramon Valley 78, Alameda 25

Avery Knapp scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds in the home rout, while Sierra Chambers scored 12 points, had six rebounds and dished out six assists. Amanda Kerner had 13 points and six assists, and Sophia Bowes had 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. 

Sacred Heart Cathedral 57, Archbishop Riordan 55

Sacred Heart Cathedral edged out Archbishop Riordan in the Jim Soden tournament championship game, led by Rezo Po’s 25 points. Ashanti Dias continued her strong start to the season by scoring 23 points, and Riordan teammate Zion McGuire went for 15 points and 12 rebounds in the close loss.
