The crash was reported around 5 p.m. May 27 on Highway 88 about 7 miles east of Kirkwood ski resort.

The Hayward man — Marcus Canizales, 50 — was riding west, toward Carson Pass, on his Harley Davidson. Witnesses told the CHP that, on a section of the two-lane highway near Red Lake, he crossed the double yellow line and collided with a motorcycle in the eastbound lane.

Both men were thrown from their motorcycles. Canizales died at the scene. The other motorcyclist, a 52-year-old man from Gardnerville, Nev., suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital in South Lake Tahoe, the CHP report said.

Both men were wearing helmets and neither had a passenger, the CHP said.
