Suspect arrested on suspicion of murder after woman pushed into BART train in San Francisco suffers fatal head injury

SAN FRANCISCO — A man was arrested on suspicion of murder Monday night after he allegedly pushed a 74-year-old woman into a train at the Powell Street BART station, causing her a fatal head injury, BART police said Tuesday.

The name of the woman who died was not immediately released.

The suspect, Trevor Belmont, 49, who authorities said was a transient, was also arrested on suspicion of inflicting injury on an elder adult likely to cause great bodily injury.

Belmont, who police said is also known as Hoak Taing, was being held without bail at the San Francisco County Jail.

BART police said about 11:06 p.m. Monday the woman was pushed by the suspect as a Millbrae-bound train was approaching the station. Police said the woman hit her head on the train and fell on the platform. She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where she later died. Police have not said if Belmont knew the woman.

Moments after the woman was pushed, BART police arrested Belmont on the platform at the station, authorities said.

Investigators were working to determine a motive for what happened and were interviewing witnesses and reviewing video surveillance.

The death is the first homicide on the BART system this year, authorities said.
