Stockton woman killed at Oakland sideshow is identified

OAKLAND — A 23-year-old Stockton woman killed Monday when authorities said she was hit by a car participating in an East Oakland sideshow was identified by the coroner’s office Thursday as Antoinette Matthews.

The car and its driver were still being sought by police Thursday.

Authorities said Matthews was a spectator at a sideshow in the 4200 block of International Boulevard that was going on about 12:45 a.m. Monday. The site has been the scene of numerous sideshows over the years.

Police said a car participating in the sideshow that was doing donuts left the roadway and slammed into Matthews. A friend took her to a hospital, where she later died.

The driver fled in the vehicle, which authorities described as an early-2000s black Ford Mustang.

Videos posted of sideshows frequently depict a chaotic scene, with one or more cars peeling out through intersections and dozens or hundreds of people crowding around to watch. Spectactors are often standing within feet or inches of vehicles moving at high speed in unpredictable directions.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the driver. Anyone with information may contact Sgt. Tim Dolan at the police traffic unit at 510-777-8570 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
