Police said the suspect — a 44-year-old man — and the man shot had been involved in a physical altercation weeks before the shooting. Authorities did not say what the altercation was about or how it began.
The attack was one in a series of shootings in the Contra Costa County town in the last month. Antioch Mayor Lamar Hernandez-Thorpe has pledged to secure $100,000 in funding to supplement police efforts to stop the violence.
The shooting happened about 9:21 a.m. Sept. 22 in a parking lot at the rear of a Rite Aid, which is at the intersection of A and East 18th streets.
Multiple shots were fired and the man and woman were both wounded and taken to a hospital. The woman has since been released. An update on the man’s condition was not available Thursday.
Police have not said if the victims knew each other.
Detectives subsequently learned of the prior altercation and got enough evidence to arrest the suspect.
It was not immediately known what crimes the suspect was arrested for. Contra Costa County jail records did not show him in custody Thursday afternoon.
Police are still investigating the case. Anyone with tips or other information may contact Detective Ibanez at 925-779-6890 or by email at [email protected].
